Tanzania Wild Camps: Travel Guide & FAQ

Planning a safari is the start of an epic adventure, but it often comes with a mountain of questions. At Tanzania Wild Camps, we specialize in turning those questions into unforgettable memories. Whether you’re dreaming of the Serengeti plains or the mists of the Ngorongoro Crater, here is your quick-fire guide to going wild in Tanzania.

QN 1: When is the best time to see the Great Migration?

To witness the iconic river crossings, visit the Northern Serengeti from July to October. Some of the Tanzania Wild Camps and properties located in the Northern Serengeti area are: Serengeti Wildebeest Camp and Serengeti Wild Camp. If you prefer seeing the calving season (thousands of zebra and wildebeest babies), head to the Ndutu area between January and March. It is an excellent time to see predators.

QN 2. Is it safe to stay in a "Wild Camp"?

Absolutely. While our camps are immersive and animals may roam nearby, your safety is our priority. Our properties like Ikoma Wild Camp feature 24/7 security, experienced Maasai warriors as escorts after dark, and reinforced, high-quality canvas tents.

QN 3. What is the difference between a Lodge and a Tented Camp?

Lodges e.g., Highview Hotel are permanent structures with brick walls and traditional hotel amenities. Tented Camps e.g., Ngorongoro Wild Camp offer a “glamping” experience—luxury canvas suites with real beds and en-suite bathrooms that keep you closer to the sounds of the bush.

QN 4. Do the camps have electricity and Wi-Fi?

Most of our camps are eco-friendly and powered by solar energy. You’ll have light and charging points in your room. While we encourage a “digital detox,” Wi-Fi is generally available in the main lounge and dining areas to share your best shots!

QN 5. What should I pack for a Tanzanian safari?

Stick to neutral colors (khaki, tan, olive) to blend in and avoid attracting insects. Pack light layers, as mornings are chilly but afternoons get hot. Don’t forget high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and a good pair of binoculars.

QN 6. Can I see the "Big Five" at your camps?

Yes! Our locations are strategically chosen for wildlife density. Ngorongoro Safari Lodge offers prime access to the Crater, one of the few places on earth where you can spot the rare Black Rhino alongside lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo.

QN 7. Are children allowed at Tanzania Wild Camps?

We love hosting families! Many of our properties, such as Highview Coffee Lodge, offer family-style cottages and “triple” tents. We provide a safe, educational environment where kids can learn about nature firsthand from our expert guides.

QN 8. How do I get to the remote camps in the Serengeti?

You can reach us by a scenic 4×4 drive from Arusha or take a “bush flight” to nearby airstrips like Seronera. Flying saves time and provides a stunning aerial view of the plains—perfect for those on a tighter schedule.

Expert Tip:

“Don’t just look for the big animals. Ask your guide about the ‘Little Five’ and the local birdlife. The magic of Tanzania is in the details you’ll hear from your tent at midnight.”
